Many servers are working their first jobs, and they don’t have a lot of information about their entitlements, their wages, or their deductions. These workers are often young, vulnerable, and lack information about their rights. Rights and protections offered and explained on almost every other job site in this province. Keeping workers in the dark is bad business and below what Albertan’s expect and deserve.
Even when workers do know their rights, they often believe that complaints won’t be taken seriously or addressed in a timely manner.
Restaurant workers should be given information about any payroll deductions taken from their earnings so they can understand their pay rates and ensure they’re being treated fairly.
And when workers aren’t being treated fairly, they should receive timely enforcement. It’s not acceptable for workers to wait six months for enforcement.
